"ADIPOLI" T-Shirt from TSHIRTBUY

"ADIPOLI" is  the synonym for "AWESOME" in Malayalam urban dictionary. Introduced to the masses in the 90’s, “ADIPOLI” has become a common word for the Malayalees across the globe. This phrase has earned huge acceptance among the young and the old alike.

The usage has variations based on the districts in Kerala and I have seen some interesting innovations. In Trivandrum the capital city, it’s often appended with “Machaa” among the younger generation. “ADIPOLI MACHAA” is an equivalent of “AWESOME BRO” or “SUPERB BRO” usage in English. If you are in THRISSUR, then the slang varies, “ADI POLI MONE” or “ADI POLI CHULLAN” is often used.  There are many investigations done on how this phrase came into life, but a logical explanation is that this phrase is an abbreviated form of “Adichu Polikya". The term literally means to break down something, it is increasingly being used as an expression of ecstasy or High Fives. When we decided to design a tee based on this well-known phrase, the challenge we faced is one of the basic one – how to represent this on an apparel. We thought of typography at first and caricatures but nothing seem interesting or evoked a blink. After sessions of brainstorming we narrowed down to a theme based on the famous sports apparel brand. The text has similarity and our only task was how to re-design the logo to avoid the copyrights issue and still convey the true meaning of the phrase. We came up with this simple design which meets the concept of “break down something”.

The close resemblance to the highly popular sports apparel brand logo is just a coincidence even after I explained how the design was finalized J.
